A little more about my studio

Derek Droogsma

Acoustic & Electric Guitar   ||   Technique, Creativity, & Musical Growth

Journey

  • Started playing at age 12 and performed across the Twin Cities in bands and solo acoustic sets

  • Began working professionally at Eagle Brook Church and across the Twin Cities at age 19

  • Extensive studio work and production experience

  • Active member of the local music scene: gigs, churches, and collaborative projects sharpen my skills as a teacher and performer

Teaching Philosophy

I believe every guitarist has untapped potential. My approach emphasizes:

  • Solid Technique: posture, finger strength, tone production

  • Musical Intention: phrasing, dynamics, and groove

  • Creative Expression: songwriting, improvisation, and personal style

  • Healthy Practice Habits: repetition strategies, mindful routines, and performance preparation

Lessons are tailored to your goals—whether it’s shredding rock riffs, fingerpicking folk, or mastering jazz chords, I focus on building skills, confidence, and enthusiasm.

What to Expect in Lessons

In a typical session, we'll cover:

  • Warm-ups and technical exercises

  • New material—scales, songs, or techniques

  • Application through playing, jamming, or improvisation

  • Goal-setting and practice strategies for ongoing progress

I encourage students to bring music they love and to explore new styles. My role is to guide you toward musical growth, keeping lessons engaging and purposeful.

My studio is a great fit for:

  • Beginners and intermediates looking for clarity and momentum

  • Advanced players ready to expand their musical toolbox

  • Adults and teens who are committed to weekly lessons and steady practice
